A SCHEME designed to improve the quality of homes in deprived parts of Darlington is to be launched.
The borough council's landlord accreditation initiative is aimed at setting minimum standards for conditions and housing management.
There are about 3,600 privately rented properties in the town, but the council does not know the number and identities of all landlords.
Officials believe that an accreditation programme will lead to better recording and mapping of private rented housing, as landlords will have to make their properties known if they are to be part of the scheme.
Incentives for landlords will include discounts on fire safety equipment and insurance, as well as free advertising of accredited property.
Properties being put forward for the scheme would have to be inspected before being approved.
Council cabinet members are due to approve the scheme when they meet on Tuesday.
