MEMBERS of the North-East Chinese Elderly Club enjoyed a celebratory meal to see in the Year of the Rooster.

While some Chinese New Year events are more vivid, up to 80 more senior members of the Chinese community from across the region preferred to concentrate on traditional forms of celebration.

These included harking back to skills and crafts that members recall being performed in their younger days in China and Hong Kong.

They also enjoyed a healthy three-course meal, fittingly to herald the onset of the Year of Rooster, including chicken, melon, New Year cake and, of course, China tea.

Members from Teesside to Northumberland, all aged 55-plus, meet weekly at Vane Tempest Community Centre, in Gilesgate, Durham.

New faces from the wider Chinese community are welcome to attend future meetings, which are held on Mondays, between 1pm and 3pm.
