THE man behind some of the most evocative sounds in movie history will be taking centre stage this weekend.
John Barry, from York, the man behind the music of many cinema classics, will be honoured by his peers when he receives the Academy Fellowship at Saturday's Bafta awards.
The winner of five Oscars and countless other awards, Barry was responsible for 11 of the James Bond themes. His other memorable scores include Born Free, Zulu, The Lion in Winter, Out of Africa and Dances with Wolves.
John Barry Prendergast was born in 1933 in York where his father ran a chain of cinemas and it was there that his love of music and film was nurtured.
In 2002 Barry, who now lives in New York State, returned to York to be made an honorary freeman of the city. The ceremony took place in the Assembly Rooms, where he used to play trumpet in a jazz band in the 1950s.
