INVESTIGATIONS into the death of a cyclist fatally injured in front of his son in a road accident are ongoing, police said yesterday.
David Sayers, 58, was run over by several vehicles after he was knocked from his bike by a car on the A689 between Hartlepool and Wolviston.
A keen cyclist, Mr Sayers was out riding two weekends ago with his son John, 22, who saw the accident.
Police confirmed yesterday the incident was still being investigated.
An inquest into Mr Sayers' death opened yesterday in Hartlepool. John, who described his father as the perfect role model, attended the opening with his mother and sister.
Coroner Malcolm Donnelly adjourned proceedings after he told the family a full inquest was likely to take place following the outcome of police inquiries.
Mr Sayers, from Norton, and his son were heading home from a bike ride to the coast just after 4pm on Saturday, January 29, when the accident took place.
John, a Leeds University student, had come home for the weekend to go riding with his father.
Following the accident, emergency services arrived at the scene within minutes, and ambulance crews tried to resuscitate Mr Sayers by the road, but he was pronounced dead less than an hour later at the University Hospital of Hartlepool.
