IF IT'S Saturday it must be a Graham Lee double day - and so it proved again at Sandown. But, for once, not both were for trainer Howard Johnson and owners Graham and Andrea Wylie.

Lee donned the now familiar black and beige silks to land the first race on Iron Man, never being headed. He said his mount was brilliant at his jumps, but Graham Wylie said he would probably only have one more run this season, not headed for Cheltenham.

Lee then partnered Oneway to win for Mark Rimmell, the fifth for this useful chaser, with a late swoop. On the Johnson-trained Boys Hurrah in the Agfa Diamond Chase (won by the French raider Innox), Lee had a crashing fall and his mount kicked his arm in the process. He did not ride again that day because of bruising.

Friday had seen him winning at Catterick for John Quinn and, recovered by Sunday, won on the Johnson-trained Another Dude. Sedgefield on Tuesday saw Lee partner a Kevin Ryan jumps winner, Super Sammy.

Tomorrow's card at Newbury looks set to give us another Lee-Johnson headline story, with at the very least a double. Their runners are Arcalis in the novices' hurdle; Valley Henry in the Aon Chase and Ballybough Rasher in the 3m f handicap hurdle.

Of course their entry, Dalaram, can also be fancied in the totesport Trophy Hurdle, but this week all the hot money was on Malcolm Jefferson's good novice, Roman Ark, Fergus King booked as usual.

This is because the rain the young stable star needs is due to fall. Jefferson has also entered Calatagan (Dougie Costello up) - a fascinating contest. Jefferson won this week with the King-ridden Classic Capers at Catterick.

The weights were published for the Grand National this week and Howard Johnson's Grey Abbey, winner of the Piller Chase, has top weight of 11st 12lb. Johnson said that if the grey doesn't go for the Gold Cup at the Cheltenham Festival, he may go for the big one if the ground is soft. Valley Henry has 11.4 and the trainer said he had always thought of this as a National horse - watch tomorrow!

Amberleigh House ran well enough on Saturday in his Wetherby outing, partnered by Dobbin, and has been allocated 11.0. Graham Lee, victor on this Ginger McCain hero last year, will be torn if Grey Abbey runs.

Ferdy Murphy's Europa is on 10.3 and Richard Guest's Red Striker, on 10.0, is spot on the bottom of the handicap. We have others, too, but let's wait until nearer the time to see who's running.

Up at Ayr on Saturday, Guest's Jericho III is entered in the 3.10 in a bid for a five-timer, where Murphy's Supreme Developer looks the main danger. The revived Jericho won under claimer Paul O'Neill at Towcester last Thursday for owner Paul Beck.

Both Guest and Murphy had Kelso winners that afternoon, too, where Jedd O'Keeffe sent out Habitual Dancer to win and Tim Easterby chose Jim Crowley to partner King's Bounty to victory.

Catterick saw Lord Bolton's Enzo De Baune return to winning ways, ridden by son Ben Orde-Powlett and trained on the Bolton Estate at Wensley by Geoff Harker.

Permit holder Ian Brown, whose yard is at Great Edstone, near Kirkbymoorside, had his first race winner since taking out his permit three years back. He has had hunter chase and point-to-point winners.

Tim FitzGerald was also on the scorecard, thanks to jockey Padge Whelan, who had insisted his mount Moment Of Madness needed two miles not more.

Whelan also won on Sunday at Musselburgh, for Richard Fahey. Brian Ellison sent out Carte Diamond to an easy win under Brian Harding, Tony McCoy being ill with the flu. The stable star will head for the Triumph Hurdle, his delighted trainer confirmed.

Peter Beaumont introduced a nice bumper winner, Seymar Lad, in the Trevor Hemmings green-gold-and-white colours at Wetherby this week.

Great Smeaton trainer Edwin Tuer, who has been quiet of late, took two this week, praising his son for schooling and reviving Through The Rye. John Wade had a win at his local track, Sedgefield.

ON THE FLAT

The rider to back at present on the all-weather is Neil Callan, who has been knocking them in on all three tracks for Kevin Ryan. The big guns are certainly warming up for the turf, last week Mark Johnston and stable jockey Joe Fanning and David Nicholls with rider son Adrian, this week Richard Fahey and Paul Hanagan hitting the mark. Fergal Lynch won for Bryan Smart and owner Reg Bond on Sir Bond last week.

Paul Mulrennan returned last week to his boss Mick Easterby from Dubai and won for John Weymes at Southwell. Other youngsters are also doing well. Neil Brown, from Hawick, who has been with Mary Reveley, recently joined Declan Carroll's Warthill yard and has won twice in the past three weeks for him. This week's Carroll winner was partnered by another good lad, Daniel Tudhope.

Bobby Elliott's son Andrew, now apprentice rider at Karl Burke's Spigot Lodge, won again for his guv'nor on the same horse which gave him his career first in mid-January, Romil Star.
