ELDERLY and disabled people are being urged by an MP to claim free gas and electricity services.
All energy suppliers provide help for customers, including bills in Braille or on audio, adaptations to make controls easier to use, a password scheme to protect against bogus callers and free annual gas safety checks.
Watchdog Energywatch has launched a campaign to ensure people are aware of the help available.
North Durham MP Kevan Jones said: "It has been brought to my attention that many elderly, disabled and vulnerable people in my constituency are unaware of the free help offered by energy-providers.
"Many people could benefit from these services, but nearly three-quarters of the people helped by this scheme are currently missing out because they do not know enough about it.
"If you think you qualify for extra help, do not be afraid to apply and, if you care for someone who is elderly or vulnerable, I would encourage you to give Energywatch a call to find out what help is on offer."
