YORK is in line for a Last Night of the Proms-style concert to be held during the Royal Ascot Week in the city, in June.
Behind the venture is Scarborough businessman Don Robinson who is planning to stage the event at York City football ground, at KitKat Crescent, on June 15.
Mr Robinson, former chairman of Hull City, and owner of the former Scarborough Zoo and Marineland, said the Welsh singer Katherine Jenkins is lined up to appear at the concert along with the London Classical Pop Orchestra.
One of his own companies, Star Television Programmes, is putting £100,000 into the venture and Mr Robinson said any surplus funds would be given to York City FC, the Variety Club of Great Britain, and a charity supporting disabled jockeys.
"We are hoping for an attendance of about 8,000 at the concert," said Mr Robinson who is in negotiations with York City Council and the police over his plans.
