Buildings ranging from schools to houses, from cricket clubs to sewage treatment works have been entered for the North-East's architecture Oscars, the Hadrian Awards 2005.

A total of 46 entries have been received this year - more than double the level of the previous awards.

Entries include the 55 Degrees North development in Newcastle, the Kings Academy college in Coulby Newham, Middlesbrough, and the £25 million Northumbria Water Wear Valley Treatment Works at Wearhead, County Durham.

Doctor Ian Waldin from Gainford Medical Centre said he was very pleased the surgery had been entered for the award.

The practice moved to the new centre in July 2003 from a house in the centre of the village.

As well as looking very good, the centre was also very functional, he said.

Dr Waldin added: "All the credit goes to the architects and planners.

"I think the red and blue colours on the outside of this building took a few people by surprise, but a lot of out patients really like it.

"When you get inside it's very nice.

"Our last building was part of the old Gainford Academy and many of the rooms had no natural light.

"This building has a very good working environment."

Graham Bell, director of the North of England Civic Trust and chairman of the Hadrian Awards, said: "There is a wide range of building types entered with projects ranging in value from £13,000 to £40 million.

"Whilst almost half the projects are in Newcastle there is a good geographical spread of entries from Alnmouth in the north to Gainford in the south, with are a number in rural areas." The biennial Hadrian Awards are organised by the regional office of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), Northern Architecture and the North of England Civic Trust.

This year, for the first time, they are open to architects from outside the region who have undertaken commissions in the North East.

All the entries are being posted on Northern Architecture's website at www.northernarchitecture.com and members of the public can nominate their favourite.

Judges are to draw up shortlists and will announce the winning entries on June 17.
