CAMPAIGNERS have used Valentine's Day to highlight the problem of domestic abuse.
Hambleton Community Safety Partnership is urging everyone to turn their attention to the hundreds of people who suffer physical and mental abuse in the home.
Last year, in Hambleton, there were 355 reported incidents of domestic abuse - 120 more than in 2002. A team from the partnership were in Northallerton and Thirsk yesterday to drive home the message, using posters bearing a single red rose and the words "hit me, kick me, punch me, love me".
Valentine's Day was chosen deliberately to launch the six-month long initiative, which will also be focusing on Mothers Day, Fathers Day and school holidays.
Catherine McNaughton, partnership domestic abuse co-ordinator, said: "We picked what is reputedly the most romantic day of the year for this launch because we hope it will make people think. To those that are victims, remember there are people out there able to help - you do not have to put up with this behaviour any longer."
