OWNERS of second homes in a rural area of the North-East are to have their council tax increased.
Currently, second homes in Teesdale qualify for a 50 per cent discount on council tax.
However, recent Government legislation has allowed local authorities to set their own discounts on second homes.
Teesdale District Council has decided to reduce the discount on second homes in the district from 50 per cent to ten per cent.
This change will be reflected in council tax bills issued for the 2005-2006 financial year.
A few exceptions will apply to the new discount, for instance if the second home is provided as part of the council taxpayer's or spouse's employment.
All second-home owners will receive a letter informing them of the change.
