IN this column yesterday we suggested it might be nice if the Government did something to recognise good neighbours, as well as taking steps to root out neighbours from hell as part of its anti-social behaviour strategy.
Today, we have decided to take the lead by launching our own search for the region's best neighbour.
We support moves by politicians of all parties to crack down on people who blight the lives of others living nearby.
But we know that, for every bad neighbour, there are many more good neighbours making communities safer, more peaceful, and friendlier.
We know that a lot of elderly, disabled and vulnerable people would not be able to stay living in their own homes without the support of neighbours popping round to help with medicines, do their shopping, cook meals, keep their houses tidy or simply provide companionship.
It is those people we want to hear about so we can tell their stories and celebrate their good deeds. In doing so, it will help redress the balance and keep anti-social behaviour in its proper perspective.
There is far more good out there than bad and it is high time it was properly appreciated. Police chiefs and civic leaders agree with us and have backed our initiative.
So if you are lucky enough to have a Neighbour From Heaven - someone special who makes your life easier - we want to hear all about them.
