Lanchester: THE vice president Jessie Goodall opened the meeting and welcomed members. The secretary June Wallis read the minutes of the last meeting and dealt with matters arising.
The possibility of planting a tree to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Lanchester WI was raised, this would replace the tree planted on the 60th anniversary, which was recently cut down.
Jean Forster gave an amusing reading on why we live so long. The competition was won by Peggy McGillivary and Ann Hutchinson won the raffle.
Lynda McDonough from Madam Curie Cancer Care gave an interesting talk on fundraising for nursing in the community. Lynda told members of her visits to schools and groups and some of the unusual and funny things people do to raise funds. The next meeting is on March 7. New members and visitors are welcome.
Leadgate: THE January meeting was presided over by Mrs Walker, who welcomed three new members. Best wished were sent to Doris Richardson, who is unwell.
The theme, Winter Nights, was read by Mrs Hedley. Mrs Alderson thanked members for their condolences during her recent bereavement. Mrs Hedley dealt with the business, and treasurer Mrs Moody gave her report.
The raffle was won by Olga Donnison and the competition by Mrs Wilson with Mrs Alderson and Mrs Donnison second and third.
John Wilkinson, director of the Shoestring Theatre Company, gave a talk about the work and cost of running a theatre. Vi Buchan gave the vote of thanks.
