COUNTY councillor Murray Naylor, deputy leader of North Yorkshire County Council, has announced that he will not be seeking re-election to the authority on May 5.
He has represented the Rillington ward for the past eight years, having been the county's executive member for corporate operations and later for social services.
He served in the army for 36 years, retiring in 1992, and for five years was chairman of the North Yorkshire Ambulance Service Trust.
"I have made many friends in my council career, especially in the Rillington area and in social services," Councillor Naylor said. "I have the greatest respect for social care workers - they do a splendid job."
He said: "I think I have made some achievements in the past eight years but I think it is time for someone younger and with new ideas to take my place."
Coun Naylor's ward is to be renamed after the elections as Thornton-le-Dale and The Wolds.
