POLICE are appealing for the people who rescued a young man from a savage assault to come forward.
The man sustained significant head injuries after the assault between 2.15am and 2.40am on Saturday.
He was attacked in Gladstone Street, and again in Selbourne Terrace, after being followed by his assailant.
Five men came to his rescue, fending off the attacker and helping the injured victim.
Durham Police are keen to speak to the men, and have appealed for them - and any other witnesses - to come forward. Anyone with information is asked to contact PC Lewis on 0845 6060365.
