A TOWN is being urged to get behind an amateur boxer as he prepares for the biggest fight of his career.
Stuey McCrone, 28, joined Spennymoor Boxing Academy as a schoolboy.
After a good start in the sport he struck a bad spell and lost nine consecutive bouts. But director of coaching Robert Ellis said the boxer never gave up and kept competing until he returned to winning ways.
He will box in the middleweight class semi-final of the Amateur Boxing Association's national senior championship, at Preston Guild Hall, on Friday next week.
Mr Ellis said: "We need plenty of supporters to go to Preston to cheer him on, he is doing the whole town of Spennymoor proud."
Tickets for the competition are available on (01772) 258858.
