Parents have pledged to continue their campaign against plans to demolish part of a Darlington school.
The borough council is proposing to tear down the infants' area of Corporation Road Primary School, as part of a £350,000 scheme to create a multi-use games facility.
The idea angered local people and a petition has been launched, calling for the building to be saved and turned into a community centre.
But campaign organisers were annoyed by a recent meeting with council officials, who insisted that the development was in the best interests of the school.
Education chiefs are now to meet school governors in an attempt to resolve the dispute.
Governor Kate Davies said: "The first meeting wasn't particularly successful.
"The council wasn't willing to talk about our compromise for turning that building to community use.
"We're still going ahead with the petition. The next stage in the process will be for the council to meet the governing body."
No date has yet been set for the meeting.
The authority insisted a reduction in the size of the school was necessary because of falling pupil numbers.
The school capacity is 630 pupils, but there are only 270 at the moment and that figure will have dropped to 210 in three years' time.
