A VILLAGE war memorial could soon be in line for a major facelift.
Shotton Colliery parish council is hoping to carry out the work, and it is asking local residents to help provide information on the cenotaph's past.
The war memorial, which dominates the entrance to the village, stands in memory to the 190 villagers who lost their lives fighting in the First and Second World Wars.
Built in 1920, the memorial has not had any upgrading work carried out for nearly 25 years.
Groundwork East Durham has already drawn up plans and schedules for the work.
The parish council is looking to replacing a crumbling wall surrounding the site and constructing a new enclosed area.
But Groundwork said this week it would be grateful for any information on the history of the memorial.
Anyone who can help should call Cheryl Tolladay on 0191-527 3333.
