WORK has started on a £490,000 project to resurface a two-mile stretch of the A1 in the region.
The scheme will see both carriageways strengthened between the B6285 at Burneston and the Londonderry interchange, in North Yorkshire.
The work will continue until the end of March.
It will see a temporary 40mph or 50mph speed limit in place on both carriageways and a night-time contraflow.
Also, all central reserve gaps and lay-bys within the two-mile stretch will be closed throughout the project.
Andrew Jennings, project manager for the Highways Agency, said: "This work will bring improvements for motorists using this section of the A1.
"Once the work is completed, it will strengthen the road surface to cope with increasing traffic demands and help improve the environment by reducing road noise pollution.
"The works are being carried out at night-time only to minimise disruption to the road users."
