A SUNDERLAND AFC star returned to his roots yesterdayto help promote a successful community scheme.
Chris Brown returned to his former school, Shotton Hall Comprehensive, in Peterlee, to launch a new phase of the Shining Through initiative, which was established in 2000 to reward youngsters for commitment to the community.
Since its launch five years ago more than 1,000 young people have been rewarded with certificates, matchday tickets and PlayStation2s after being nominated by their schools for their work.
"This is a very worthwhile scheme and I am delighted to be part of it,'' said Chris.
He added: "It is important for our young people to value our community and show good citizenship, so I hope the children at my former school can learn a great deal from it.''
Categories for the scheme include personal improvement, contribution to the school and local community.
Schools are invited to nominate young people who have made a difference to their communities.
Football club foundation director Lesley Spuhler said: "This is a great chance for schools or community groups to nominate a young person who has demonstrated a personal or community achievement.
"Last year, we had some worthy winners including young people who had taken part in fundraising initiatives for charity or had helped others less fortunate than themselves, such as assisting and supporting disabled pupils or helping elderly people in their neighbourhood.''
