MOTORISTS have been warned to check their vehicle excise licences or risk a fine.
The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) is launching a campaign, starting this week, on road tax cheats.
John Moore, enforcement manager for DVLA, said that the agency is bringing extra wheelclamp units and Stingray cameras, in addition to squads of inquiry officers, into North Yorkshire.
"From past experience, we have found that up to 80 per cent of untaxed vehicles have no insurance and up to 70 per cent of the occupants of these vehicles had criminal records."
He said the DVLA is working with the police as part of the campaign.
There are an estimated 19,000 motorists evading road tax in North Yorkshire.
