A COMMUNITY centre fighting for survival has been given a glimmer of hope.
South Bank Women's Centre could be forced to close its doors by as early as July, because of a lack of funding.
The centre has provided a wide range of services to about 700 women and girls from around the Tees Valley for 18 years.
After learning of the centre's struggle, MP Vera Baird has stepped in to lend a helping hand.
The Redcar politician has approached Tees Valley Learning and Skills Partnership (LSP) to intervene in the funding crisis.
A meeting has now been arranged with LSP chief executive Pam Eccles and centre manager Kathy Lloyd.
The MP said: "The women's centre is hugely important throughout the Tees Valley for bringing women into learning who would never go to an ordinary college. And many go on to other courses or get jobs.
"We all have hopes now of a particular European funding stream, though nothing is certain."
The centre also offers counselling services, back to work advice, work experience and IT training.
Closure of the centre would mean unemployment for five full-time staff, four part-time and 15 crche workers.
Manager Kathy Lloyd said: "Vera has brought us hope that we certainly need.
"We are in good discussions with the LSP and would welcome help with our bidding. The centre must be saved."
Potential sponsors or volunteers are asked to call Kathy Lloyd or Susanna Sargeant on (01642) 296166.
