TWO community groups in Darlington have been shocked by the sudden resignation of one of their most prominent members after a row at a residents' meeting.
Tom Nicholson, who was secretary of the Friends of North Park group and chairman of the North Road Partnership, said he would quit both groups after a Friends meeting on Wednesday night.
It followed an argument at the meeting over whether the group should push for North Park to be made an alcohol-free zone. But Mr Nicholson, who wants to see alcohol banned, said the events were unrelated.
Councillor Steve Jones, chairman of Friends of North Park, said his decision came out of the blue.
"Tom was involved in a dispute at the meeting with a woman who disagreed with his views over alcohol in public spaces, and he got a bit irate," he said. "The meeting ended at around 8pm and he stormed out about 8.30pm.
"He's a valued member of both groups, and this was never expected. We don't know his exact reason for resigning, or whether he will relent, but we don't think he will."
Darlington Community Partnership confirmed that Mr Nicholson had contacted them, but said nothing had yet been decided, so they were unable to confirm his resignation.
Mr Nicholson said his decision was purely for personal reasons and did not want to comment further, but added: "This matter is not up for debate."
However, Coun Jones reassured residents that the recently-formed Friends group would continue as it was.
"Nothing will be changed, and it will not affect our plans," he said. "There were many more things to come out of the meeting,"
The group discussed plans for redevelopment of the park's playground, which could cost up to £100,000. They have already been given £14,000 in grants.
Residents have planned a walk round the park on Sunday, April 3, at 2pm, for park users to discuss their visions for the future and how the money should be spent.
Pupils from Longfield Comprehensive School also agreed to conduct a school survey, to see what young people wanted from the park.
"We are making good progress, and hope that continues," said Coun Jones.
