A school is helping its pupils get the best possible sporting chance.
Bishop Barrington School, in Bishop Auckland, will open a £1.5m sports hall in September.
And staff will submit a bid for specialist sports status, which could mean having more money to spend on teaching and facilities.
Yesterday, former international referee George Courtney, from Spennymoor, and Tony Duffy, from Bishop Auckland Football Club, launched the twin venture.
Mr Courtney said: "It is important for people of all ages to be involved in sport. Apart from keeping them active and well, it helps them make friends and bridges the gap between different generations."
The sports hall, built by Amec, will replace outdated facilities and will be open for community use.
Headteacher Bruce Guthrie hopes to develop future sporting stars through top class coaching and access to scholarships.
The school must raise £50,000 in sponsorship to bid for sports status and is appealing for support. Call deputy headteacher Phil Brown on (01388) 660904.
