KARATE kid Kathryn Sams has earned her black belt at the age of ten.
The award makes the County Durham girl one of the youngest martial arts experts in the country.
She has been training up to three times a week since taking to the sport in January 2003.
Despite being just under 4ft 6ins she gained the ultimate prize at Prudhoe High School.
Kathryn, of The Hawthorns, West Kyo, near Stanley, said: "I am very proud of myself but it was hard work. I like everything about karate from the competitions to the training.
"It is definitely something I am going to continue with."
She had to do 13 katas, or set movements, kick and punch combinations, pad work and sparring as well as understand Japanese phrases as part of the assessment.
The Annfield Plain Junior School pupil trains with Seiken Ryu Karate Association.
Sensei Steve Yeats said: "Kathryn has got natural ability and has done stunningly well to achieve her first dan black belt at the age of ten, especially on her first attempt.
"I believe she is one of the youngest in the country. She is exceptionally strong for her age and very mature."
Her father, Gary Sams, is holding a party at their home with family and friends today to celebrate.
He said: "We are extremely proud of this marvellous achievement."
