A CHARITY for the blind and visually impaired has been given an award for its work in the community.

Blind Life in Durham (Blind) have been chosen to receive a BT Community Connection award, giving them new computer software and Internet access.

The group, who are all blind or partially-sighted, applied for the award along with dozens of other charities.

Vice-treasurer Margaret Welch said: "It's good for the group. There are not many groups providing services for the blind in the area so it's great. Hundreds of charities applied, so it is a good achievement."

The group will now be able to install software called Jaws, making the computer easier to use for members, as well as set up a website to help blind people in the region.

Blind was set up in June last year and holds monthly meetings. Anybody wanting to join the group can contact Mrs Welch on (01388) 764526.
