DEVELOPERS have submitted controversial plans to demolish a landmark pub and hotel on the edge of Darlington.
Premier Homes UK has lodged proposals with the borough council for the demolition of the White Horse Hotel, in North Road.
The company wants to bulldoze the pub to make way for housing.
The plans it submitted to the borough council last Wednesday reveal the firm's hopes for 24 one-bedroomed flats and 40 two-bedroomed apartments.
Letters have been distributed to nearby homeowners, informing them of the proposals and seeking their views.
One resident, who did not want to be named, told The Northern Echo yesterday: "I think it is absolutely disgraceful that they want to do this.
"The White Horse is very well-known and is an important part of Darlington."
A council spokeswoman said last night: "The council is talking with the agents about the ins and outs of the application, and nothing has been decided yet."
Nobody from the Durham-based Howarth Litchfield Partnership, which is acting as agent for Premier Homes, was available for comment last night.
