HOUSE sparrows are the most common birds in North-East gardens, new figures have revealed.
The results of the RSPB's Big Garden Birdwatch, the world's biggest bird survey, showed that the sparrow was top of the bird-watching table in County Durham, Tyne and Wear, Northumberland and the Tees Valley.
The starling was in second place, and the blue tit, third.
Almost 10,500 people took part in the survey in the region, which was carried out throughout the country in January.
The North-East trend was reflected around the country, with the sparrow being the most common bird nationally.
David Hirst, of RSPB North England, said: "This sort of survey helps the RSPB to understand more about the population trends of UK garden birds.
"Wild birds are an excellent indicator of the health of the environment and this survey produces a valuable snapshot of winter garden bird populations."
