THE North-East will receive more than £178m in the next three years from the Government to invest in housing.
The money, which will be allocated through local authorities and housing associations, is part of £5.5bn being spent nationally.
Jonathan Blackie, the chairman of the North-East Housing Board, which advises ministers on how resources should be spent on housing, said: "These resources will be targeted to regional priorities identified in the North-East housing strategy, which is currently being up-dated. The money will also lever in investment from other public agencies and the private sector."
The aim is to renovate and improve social houses or private houses occupied by vulnerable people; regenerate areas and to provide affordable housing.
The Tees Valley will be given extra funds, and will receive a share of £23m
