A NORTH-EAST theatre stage has been turned into an ice rink for some of the world's most skilful skaters.
The 500-seat Gala Theatre, in Durham, is hosting Cinderella on Ice featuring The Russian Ice Stars, including the Sydney 2000 Olympics gold medallist Ioulia Barsoukova.
Managers of the show, which opened last night and runs until Saturday, organised a round-the-clock operation to ensure the performers have a surface on which to show off their dazzling artistry.
The stage was extended into the orchestra pit and turned into a paddling pool filled with a quarter of a mile of refrigeration pipes.
Ice chips were poured into the pool and then staff sprayed water on them throughout the night.
The Wednesday and Saturday matinees are sold out, but tickets are still available for evening performances, which start at 7.30pm.
Tickets are £19.50 and £21.50 (concessions £18), and £10 for those under 16. To book, call 0191-332 4041
