VOLUNTEERS are needed to help teach basic skills to young offenders.
Deerbolt Young Offenders' Institution, near Barnard Castle, County Durham, is looking for people to help teach literacy and maths to inmates.
Over three-quarters of the inmates have literacy skills below that of an average 11-year-old and nearly half have below an 11-year-old's ability for maths.
Maria Waddington, Deerbolt's head of skills for life, said: "We have volunteers aged 18 to 83. They don't need special skills, as we train them - they just need a sense of humour and to be willing to work with young people.
Volunteer tutors work alongside a teacher and can work towards a City and Guilds Level 2 supporter's qualification in basic skills.
Anyone interested in volunteering can contact Ms Waddington on (01833) 633320.
