A YOUNG actress has won the chance to study in the home of the movies.

But Helen Hogan, 19, needs £15,000 to take up a place to study for a degree at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in Hollywood, California.

Helen, of Carrville, Durham City, won the offer of a place following an audition in London and then got a scholarship that pays ten per cent of the course fee.

But to cover her first year costs she needs £10,000 to pay for the course and £5,000 for living expenses.

"I first caught the acting bug while going to the Stage Door Theatre School in Hartlepool on Saturdays. The teachers there inspired me and ever since I have loved acting and dance.

"I performed at the Old Vic in London with the Italia Conti School for the Queen's Jubilee celebrations and I try to get involved in as many performances locally as I can.''

Local education authority funding is not available for drama courses overseas and she is now facing the daunting task of raising the money while studying aerobics, dance and fitness instruction at Newcastle College.

She is hoping for help with fundraising ideas.

"The American Academy of Dramatic Arts has a great reputation. It's America's Rada. Past students include Robert Redford, Grace Kelly and Kim Cattrall.''
