TRAVELLERS choosing to let the train take the strain this weekend face delays on the main North-South route.
Engineering works are being carried out on the East Coast Main Line, connecting the North-East and North Yorkshire with London and Scotland.
The works are being carried out between Newcastle and York today and tomorrow and services are being replaced by buses.
Network Rail says this weekend was chosen for the work as it is one of the quietest for travel with most people choosing to get away and return on Friday and Monday.
Roads were busy, particularly heading to the coast, although police reported no major blockages. Queues were reported on the A1 northbound in North Yorkshire due to sheer weight of traffic and on the A64 eastbound towards Scarborough just outside York.
