A CHARITY football match between two old rivals has raised thousands of pounds for machinery at a community hospital.
The Clay Hogs, of Stanhope, beat The Flesh Fleas, of Wolsingham, 2-1 when they played in rain and fog yesterday.
The teams went head-to-head as part of their long-standing rivalry, in front of 150 spectators.
Anita Savory, the charity match organiser, said: "We have raised approximately £2,000 which is great.
"The rain didn't dampen any of the high spirits that have been here today.
"It was a great match and I think the celebrations will go on into the night."
She added: "As for the score, there is always next year for Wolsingham."
Former international referee George Courtney, from Spennymoor, brought his whistle out of retirement to ensure fair play.
The event raised money to help fund a patient monitoring machine for Wolsingham Community Hospital. It comprises a heart rate monitor and blood pressure gauge and costs about £4,000
