THE over-50s are being honoured next month as part of the Year of the Volunteer.
Each month, a different group is recognised and next month it is the turn of the older generation, in Older People Month.
Members of the Evergreens group of over-50s, who meet on Wednesdays from 10.30am to 3.30pm, at Bishop Auckland Town Hall, are old hands at volunteering.
They take part in activities such as illustrated talks and demonstrations. Many are involved in community volunteering and have been since retirement.
Research shows that 45 per cent of people aged 65 to 74, and 35 per cent of those over 75, give time regularly to help others.
One member of the group who has been volunteering since her husband died 12 years ago, said: "Volunteering saved me. The people you meet are amazing and I have made friends for life through the various roles I have had."
