WORK is well under way on the £30m redevelopment of the Walkergate car park in Durham city centre.
The development, which started in mid-December last year, was visited by Durham City Council leader Councillor Fraser Reynolds.
He said: "It's great to see the workmen on site and the scheme beginning to take shape.
"It is marvellous to be part of a project that will change this run-down area for the benefit of everyone who lives, works and visits Durham - and it shows the council's commitment to improving the city."
The project, due to be completed in May 2006, will complement the Gala Theatre and Millennium Square, stimulating the local economy with high-quality bars and restaurants.
Among the chains secured are Lloyds Caf Bar, Ha Ha Bar and Canteen, Ask Restaurants, Nando's, Caf Rouge and TGI Friday's.
It will also have a 500-space multi-storey car park, which will ease parking problems within the city.
A spokesman for construction company Amec, who accompanied the council leader, said: "It is such a great feeling to be on site and see work progressing really well in Durham.
"It is exciting for Amec to be a major part of further development of such a historic city."
