POLICE are seeking witnesses after hundreds of revellers were evacuated from a club when a smoke canister was let off.
A police spokesman said more than 200 people enjoying a Good Friday night had to flee the Horden Big Club, in Eden Street Club, Horden, Peterlee, while firefighters cleared the smoke.
The canister, similar to one used by the Army, was set off deliberately in the dance hall end of the club, at about 9.40pm.
Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service watch manager Malcolm Wade, ofPeterlee Fire Station, said: "When we got there, around 300 people were outside and the police were already in the building.
"The club was unable to re-open."
Acting Sergeant Neil Johnson said: "The result of the dance floor suddenly appearing full of smoke could have been very serious.
"Many people rushed out in panic as they feared fire. Fortunately, no one was hurt."
Anyone with information is asked to contact Acting Sgt Johnson on 0845 6060365.
