A PARISH plan calling for 20mph speed limits to be introduced in residential areas has been published by villagers.
The plan has been put together by the 320 residents of the Westow parish in Ryedale, which includes the villages of Westow, Firby and Kirkham.
They were consulted on what they would like to see in their local community.
As a result, the Westow Parish Plan 2005-2008 has been produced by the parish council and sent out to residents.
It is the first of its kind in the area and was funded by the Countryside Agency, with support from the Yorkshire Rural Community Council.
Residents said they wanted to see a 20mph speed limit introduced in residential areas, a neighbourhood watch scheme promoted and broadband internet provision secured.
Key priorities include improving roads and travel, improving community life and protecting the environment.
Targets for next year are improving recycling facilities and increasing school bus routes.
Phil Kershaw, chairman of Westow Parish Council, said: "The parish council has been working to develop the local community for a number of years and during a council meeting in 2003, it was agreed that a parish plan would enable residents of all ages to have their say and contribute actively in developing and improving the parish.
"I am delighted with the contributions we have received from so many local people.
"The plan reflects what they really want for their community and will help us to take their ideas forward and allow our parish to flourish."
Another area highlighted for action was the setting up of a parish website. This has now been achieved and residents can access local news, event information and features at www.westow.org.uk.
