AN inquest was opened yesterday into the death of a university student who was hit by a bus.
Richard Hyde, 21, was hit as he tried to cross the A693 in New Kyo, near Stanley, in County Durham, at 6.40am last Monday.
The student had left his silver Vauxhaull Astra in West View, Stanley, a mile from the accident scene.
Police who are at a loss to explain why Mr Hyde was in Stanley, said inquiries had revealed that the car had been left after 2am last Monday.
Durham Coroner Andrew Tweddle adjourned yesterday's inquest pending further inquiries.
Meanwhile, tributes were paid to the chemistry student by Dr John Errington, head of Newcastle University's School of Natural Sciences.
Dr Errington said: "Richard was a hard-working, dedicated and lively student who was very popular with staff and his fellow students."
"His untimely death is a tragedy and our hearts go out to his family at this time."
