TODAY is the last day for entries to the national short story competition run through The Northern Echo.

Also backed by Orange and Darlington Arts Centre, the competition is organised by Darlington company Inscribe Media Limited.

Adult category entries have reached 210 and the junior section has attracted 45 short stories. A majority of the entries are from the North-East and North Yorkshire.

The adult section is for writers aged 17 or over. The maximum length of stories is 3,000 words. First prize is £300 and a trip to London to attend the Orange Prize for Fiction on June 7, courtesy of Orange, if the winner lives in the UK.

The junior section is for writers aged 11 to 16. Stories must be no more than 2,000 words and winners will receive a book token donated by Ottakar's, in Darlington.

Author John Dean, of Darlington, will also give a free writing workshop at the winner's school as part of the prize, if the winner is from the North-East.

Writers are asked to clearly mark which category they are entering.
