YOUNG people at a Chester-le-Street school have gone the extra mile to raise funds for charity.

Pupils and staff at the Hermitage School took part in a sponsored mile-long fun run around the school.

Headteacher Ian Robertson said: "We raised a staggering £8,000 from the event.

"Some of those taking part dressed up in costume, others did three-legged runs and one group of sixth formers made a huge chain and tied their legs to each other."

Emma Shaw, lead member of the school council, said: "The event was held before the Tsunami disaster and we know that since that terrible event, many charities have seen donations dwindle as people support the disaster appeal.

"With that in mind, we have decided to support four charities with £1,000 going to Leukaemia Research, £1,000 to the NSPCC, £1,000 to Macmillan Nurses and £5,000 to cancer awareness."
