PRODUCERS should try to handle new season lambs twice a week to avoid them becoming overfat, according to the Eblex Returns Programme.
With new season spring lambs starting to come forward, the BRP's ongoing series of lamb selection days focuses on handling tips for the new crop.
"Spring lambs grow muscle and fat very quickly as the weather and grass improves," said the BRP's David Eden. "Lamb selection days are a useful reminder for producers on handling early lambs, which ought to be twice a week to avoid them missing target carcase specifications."
Producers attending a BRP lamb selection day will be given practical tips on how to handle early season lamb to avoid bruising the carcase - one of the main problems, which can result in price penalties at the abattoir.
"It's also worthwhile checking handling systems and your transport facilities to make sure they are in sound order, with no sharp edges or hazards which could cause bruising," said Mr Eden.
BRP early season lamb selection days are held at abattoirs in Northern England from the end of April onwards. Further information is available from Sophie Whigham on 01953 601655.
