NEW neighbourhood policing teams are to be introduced in North Yorkshire.

Each of the 53 teams will be a mix of police officers, community support officers, specials and other volunteers.

A recruitment drive is under way, and the teams will focus on crime and anti-social behaviour.

The powers of the community support officers will be enhanced to include limited detention powers and the power to issue fixed penalty tickets to address anti-social activity.

Chief Constable Della Cannings said: "Working in partnership with other agencies and our local communities has been the cornerstone of policing in North Yorkshire.

"Having readily identifiable neighbourhood policing teams means we can develop even closer links with the public we serve."

Police authority chairwoman Jane Kenyon said: "Neighbourhood policing is responding to the ongoing police reform as well as the local consultation we have carried out with our communities, and reflects the way they wish to be policed."
