ELEVEN pointer puppies need new homes after being rescued by the RSPCA from a property in the North-East.
The plight of the dogs came to light yesterday after a concerned resident contacted the society to report concerns.
RSPCA inspector Emma Ellis visited a house in Sunderland where she found the pups living in conditions which she described as unacceptable. They had no baskets to sleep in but, instead, had been placed inside a baby's cot, which had become dirty with excrement and urine.
The animals' owner realised he could not cope with the animals and signed them over to the RSPCA.
The RSPCA is not pursuing the case as a prosecution.
Insp Ellis said: "This gentleman realised that the situation was getting out of control and was sensible enough to take the help that was offered to him, rather than becoming obstructive and risking a possible prosecution.
"I am hoping to find loving and permanent homes for these pups. They will make great pets and deserve better in the future."
The pups are being cared for at private boarding kennels in Ponteland, near Newcastle, and after a period of assessment will be available for re-homing.
If you would like to offer one or more of the pups a home, contact Sunderland branch dog rehomer John Black on 07973 952575
