RESIDENTS in east Durham may have to pay up to get rid of some of their old rubbish.
Until now, household waste has been removed free by Easington District Council.
However, because of the spiralling demand for the service, the council is to introduce a £10 charge for the removal of certain items.
These will include windows, kitchens, heating systems, internal doors and bathroom suites.
A free collection service will remain for most domestic items, including carpets, washing machines, wardrobes televisions and beds.
The environmental health and licensing manager for the council, Keith Parkinson, said the service had grown to a point where, during the 2003-4 period, there were 41,000 collections.
He also reminded residents that they would still be able to utilise the district's household waste recycling centres free of charge, but, if using a van, trailer or pick-up, they would need to acquire a free permit by calling Durham County Council on 0191-383 5656
