A MAN who admitted assaulting the young mother of his baby narrowly avoided prison yesterday.
Michael Wanless threw a portable television and stereo at the head of the 17-year-old in the attack, the court heard.
Wanless, 21, of Station Road, Darlington, admitted assault, criminal damage and theft to magistrates in Newton Aycliffe.
He was given a rehabilitation order for a year, to tackle problems with alcohol abuse and anger management, and must pay £500 compensation.
The assault occurred after the couple, who had been together for 14 months, had been drinking heavily in Darlington on February 12.
Rachel Masters, prosecuting, said: "The defendant followed the victim home, asking if he could stay for the night and she said 'no'.
"The victim said the defendant entered her flat and an argument broke out. She said he picked up an ashtray and threw it at her head."
He then threw the stereo and the television, she said, before leaving and dropping her keys down a drain.
Chris Bunting, defending, said Wanless was of previous good character.
Magistrate David Raine told Wanless: "In many ways, you are lucky not to be given a custodial sentence."
