A MUSEUM is going back in time for a month-long series of events to mark the 60th anniversary of VE Day.
The National Railway Museum (NRM) in York is running 60 Years Ago -Railways in War and Peace from Saturday until Sunday, May 8.
There will concert and marching band music with the Yorkshire Air Cadets this weekend, as well as the chance to take part in demonstrations with Yorkshire Women's Institute.
Members will show visitors how people had to make do and mend in everyday life.
On show for the first time will be Waterloo in War and Peace, an exhibition by artist Helen McKie exploring her work inspired by Waterloo station's history.
There will also be vintage road vehicles, archive wartime film footage, talks on railway vehicles, tours and train rides.
The celebrations will culminate with a VE Day anniversary dinner dance on Saturday, May 7, and a party in the museum's Station Hall the following day.
Programme manager Paul Bisson said: "The NRM will be giving all the family a chance to discover the enormous part that locomotives and the railways played during the Second World War.
"The month-long event will feature plenty of activities which capture the spirit of the times, and we hope that not only will younger generations be able to discover what it was like under wartime conditions, but our older visitors will see their experiences and memories brought back to life."
The museum is open daily from 10am to 6pm. Admission is free.
