A POLICE force is encouraging drivers and passengers to wear seat belts.
Road checks are being set up in Teesside's four policing districts.
Insp Eric Robinson, head of Cleveland's road policing unit, said: "We are not being heavy handed but doing our utmost to save lives and reduce casualties for those people unfortunate enough to be involved in collisions."
"We want to save lives and not have to deal with the aftermath.
"Motorists can do much to ensure the safety of themselves - and their passengers - by making sure everyone in their vehicles is belted up before they move off."
He said it was just as important to wear a seat belt while going on short journeys to the local shop as it was when setting out on long motorway trips.
Police are working with council road safety officers who will be on hand to offer advice on child and baby seat restraints. The new drive is part of a European-wide campaign to ensure people abide by seat belt regulations.
