THERE was a song in the air yesterday when Florence Muncaster celebrated her 100th birthday.
Now a resident at the Lindisfarne Care Home, in Chester-le-Street, Mrs Muncaster was joined by members of her family and staff at a party to mark the special day. But as an extra surprise, the home had arranged for a local singer to present a selection from her favourite Al Jolson songs.
Born in Pelton Fell in 1905, Mrs Muncaster has lived all her life in the area and is one of its most well known and respected residents.
Her late husband James Muncaster, began his working life as a farmer, later securing employment in the mining industry.
The couple had two children, Colin and Edward, both of whom have been survived by their mother.
Grandson David Muncaster had travelled to the home to help his grandmother celebrate her birthday.
He said: "Before coming into full-time care, my grandmother enjoyed helping at Pelton Community Centre and was a keen member of the local over- 60s club."
But yesterday, Mrs Muncaster happily listened to the music and proudly showed off her card from the Queen.
