THE council in Darlington is to approve the spending of large amounts of cash on schools in the town.
The borough council is planning to spend the cash on building new schools and refurbishing existing ones.
A large amount of the money will be spent on the creation of the new Haughton education village, as well as the new Alderman Leach, Skerne Park and Corporation Road primary schools.
Rewiring and lighting work costing almost £500,000 will be carried out at Abbey Infants, Hurworth Primary, Mount Pleasant Primary, Mowden Junior, North Road Primary and Red Hall Primary schools.
Repair work on heating and boilers - costing more than £300,000 - will be done at Abbey Infants and Juniors, and Mowden Infants and Juniors.
Asbestos removal work will be carried out at North Road and Reid Street primary schools.
The council's cabinet is expected to approve the release of the funds needed when it meets on Tuesday.
