A FUNERAL director is helping to feed and house unwanted cats by collecting for the Wear Valley and Darlington branch of Cats Protection.
Staff at the Co-operative Funeral service, Church Street, Shildon, are appealing to people to donate cat food, blankets or toys for the cats taken in by the charity's shelter in the town.
Manager Alan Williamson said "We're asking members of the local community to help the many abandoned and sick cats which are cared for by Cats Protection throughout the year.
"Unwanted, abandoned and feral cats are constantly in need of help, not just in the cold weather, but through all the seasons."
Cats Protection branch co-ordinator Marion Maychell said: "We rely entirely on voluntary contributions to feed and provide for the many cats that are brought into our care, so we are extremely grateful for every donation."
Collection boxes will be in the funeral home until May 3, along with information leaflets and items for sale.
